Here are 10 ways to make someone feel important:
1.) Use my name.
2.) Greet me with energy and enthusiasm like you are happy to see me. Be ardent and Genuine and it will set the tone for the entire encounter.
3.) Invite me to your club, i like to save money, add up rewards, receive information, i like to feel like i belong to something.
4.) Ask me my advice, I have an opinion and I like to share it.
5.) Acknowledge me, when we are together, in person or on the phone truly acknowledge me and let me know you are glad to see me, nobody likes to be ignored.
6.) Ask me questions about me,
7.) Surprise me, with a little extra something or a handwritten note. A special gift or sample, ”just because”, when you get a surprise what do you do with it … share it … right?
8.) Apologize, nothing is worse than dealing with someone that always has to be right. When things do go wrong though, please give me a simple apology. Here’s the funniest thing. When you make a mistake, and then apologize (perhaps even including a surprise of some sort) I’ll love you more than ever. Apologies and good service recoveries are so rare that you can take my dissatisfaction and turn it into loyalty, if you will do this right.
9.) Listen. Above all else, listen to me, I can tell when you are really listening to me and that makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, because true listening is rare. Listen to my concerns. Listen to my ideas. Listen to my requests. Slow down and truly take the conversation in, listen to the words, the tonality, rate of speech and body language. Relax and enjoy the time with the other person, identify their needs, what do they need in that given moment. If you truly do this we will have less misunderstandings and we will be come closer and closer and if done right we will think like one! Lastly, when you genuinely listen, you can’t believe how good that makes me feel.
10.) Appreciation. I Appreciate the small things that you do for me. And please never pass up an opportunity to say Thank You. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy…a few kind words or even a simple note is plenty. Find simple and small ways to show appreciation in every possible situation. J
So in a nutshell, ask great questions, infuse energy, excitement and enthusiasm. Remember what your Mom taught you, be polite and courteous, listen to understand the other person. Be genuine and acknowledge them. From time to time surprise them, apologize when appropriate and most of all show them appreciation. Kind words go a long way!
